Niels Broekhuizen

Niels Broekhuizen is a Dutch high-performance sailing coach, athlete mentor, and program director based in The Bahamas, where he leads one of the fastest-growing youth and Olympic-development sailing environments in the Caribbean.

With experience ranging from elite Olympic-level sparring and technical coaching to grassroots athlete development, Niels has built a coaching identity around one core idea: helping good people strive to become better. His work has expanded from individual coaching into building sustainable systems that combine high-performance standards with mentorship, culture, and long-term personal growth.

Having recently competed at the highest level himself, Niels understands both the technical and emotional demands athletes face, pressure, uncertainty, expectations, and balancing performance with identity. His coaching combines high-performance standards, technical precision, emotional intelligence, and individualized mentorship, adapting to the athlete rather than forcing every sailor into the same system.

Through Lyford Cay Sailing and Sail Better, Niels works with athletes, federations, and programs across the Caribbean and internationally to bridge the gap between regional sailing environments and world-class performance systems.

Champions are people who are good and strive to become better. High performance starts with culture before results, consistency beats intensity, environment shapes performance, and clarity creates confidence. The aim is independent athletes who can make decisions under pressure and own their progression.
