The Caribbean Should Grow Its Own Coaches
A structured pathway from monitor to instructor to coach, so the region develops its own coaching depth instead of importing it.
Why this exists
Depth, Not Dependence
The Caribbean cannot keep importing its coaching. It has to grow its own.
The Sail Better coach-development pathway is a deliberate route that takes a willing volunteer or young sailor and moves them, step by step, from monitor to instructor to coach. The goal is not simply to certify people. It is to raise competency, safety, professionalism and care, so every sailor is taught in an environment that is safer, more structured and more capable.
Above all, the programme is designed to renew itself. Every coach we develop is expected, in time, to develop the next. That is how a region builds depth instead of depending on a handful of individuals.
The pathway
Monitor. Instructor. Coach.
Stage 1
Monitor
Instructor-development clinics teach the fundamentals most programmes leave to chance: safety, rescue, risk management and how to run a group on the water.
Stage 2
Instructor
Formal coaching courses and the Board of Sailing Instructor Exams set a consistent regional standard for competency and certification.
Stage 3
Coach
Mentored, on-water coaching beside an experienced coach: observing, being observed and receiving feedback, rather than learning leadership by accident.
One coach can influence thousands of lives. Great coaches create great environments; great environments create great athletes.
